Pillar 1 · Employer of Record → Deel vs Remote
Deel vs Remote (2026): the total-cost comparison for distributed SaaS teams
Pricing checked against both vendors' own pages as of 2026-07. Two hires costed line by line, the four differences that actually move the decision, and a verdict that depends on where you're hiring.
This is a narrower page than our Employer of Record pillar, which compares five providers. Here we go deeper on the two that end up on most shortlists: real deposit terms, real payroll cut-offs, and what happens to your equity plan.
Short version: the headline fee gap is $100 per employee per month, and it's the least interesting thing about this decision. What matters is whether Remote owns an entity in your country of hire, whether your parent company is a Delaware C-Corp, and how much working capital you can afford to park with a vendor at signing.
A pricing correction first
Our EOR pillar, written 2026-07-19, records Remote at "$599/mo annual or $699 monthly" and cites 170+ country coverage. That came partly from third-party trackers, because remote.com/pricing sits behind a Cloudflare layer that returns only a page title to automated fetches — it did so again on 2026-07-31.
We do have three rendered snapshots of that page in our own pipeline, captured 2026-07-15, 2026-07-20 and 2026-07-27. All three say the same thing: $699 per employee/month, one figure, with a billing-currency selector and no annual-versus-monthly toggle anywhere on the page. Coverage is stated as "90+ countries", not 170+.
The newer primary evidence wins. This page uses $699 as Remote's list price and treats $599 as a negotiated rate that some buyers clearly get but nobody is entitled to. Deel's $599 is unambiguous: it's printed on deel.com/pricing, which we fetched successfully on 2026-07-31, matching all three snapshots.

Sources: Deel pricing page, fetched live 2026-07-31 and matching our snapshots of 2026-07-15 / 07-20 / 07-27. Remote pricing page — live fetch blocked by Cloudflare 2026-07-31, figures taken from our rendered snapshots of the same three dates. Payroll cut-off and deposit mechanics come from both vendors' help centres, which are also Cloudflare-protected; we sourced them via indexed help-centre articles rather than direct fetch, so treat those two rows as documented-but-second-hand and confirm them in writing before you sign. Coverage counts are marketing figures and not apples-to-apples.
Worked example: one senior engineer in Berlin, costed both ways
Target compensation €90,000 gross annual, Berlin-competitive for a senior engineer. Employer burden follows the same method as the pillar's Germany example: pension 9.3%, health ~8.75% and long-term care 1.7% both capped at the €5,812.50/month contribution ceiling, unemployment 1.3%, insolvency levy 0.15%, work-accident insurance ~1% by Berufsgenossenschaft sector. Because this salary sits above the health ceiling, blended effective burden lands near 19.6%, not the 21–22% headline. FX at 0.87138 EUR/USD from our rate pipeline's 2026-07-30 capture; the 0.5% FX drag is a floor, roughly what a Wise Business or Airwallex tier costs on this corridor.
| Line | Via Deel | Via Remote |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | €7,500 | €7,500 |
| Employer social contributions (~19.6%) | €1,470 | €1,470 |
| FX drag, 0.5% on €8,970 pass-through | €45 | €45 |
| EOR fee (USD list → EUR at 0.87138) | $599 → €522 | $699 → €609 |
| Total per month | €9,537 | €9,624 |
| Total per year | €114,444 (~$131,300) | €115,488 (~$132,500) |
| Deposit held at signing | ~€11,900 (1.25× monthly) | €0 |
Deel is €1,044 per year cheaper on this hire — the $1,200 fee gap, converted. That's 0.9% of the true cost of employing this person. Meanwhile Remote is holding €11,900 less of your cash. For a seed-stage team, the working-capital difference is worth more than the fee difference, and it isn't close.
Same math, Manila instead
One mid-level engineer at $36,000 gross annual, paid in PHP at ₱61.54/USD (same 2026-07-30 capture). Employer statutory contributions cap out fast: SSS 10% of a monthly salary credit capped at ₱35,000 = ₱3,500, PhilHealth ₱2,500, Pag-IBIG ₱200, EC premium ₱30. Add mandatory 13th-month pay accrued at 1/12 of monthly basic — on ₱184,620 gross that's ₱15,385/month. Total employer burden ₱21,615/month, about $351.
- Pass-through: $3,000 salary + $351 burden = $3,351, plus $17 FX drag
- Via Deel: $3,967/month → $47,604/year
- Via Remote: $4,067/month → $48,804/year
Identical $1,200 annual gap, but now it's 2.5% of total cost instead of 0.9%. The fee delta scales inversely with salary. If your hiring skews toward South and Southeast Asia, LATAM, or Eastern Europe, Deel's price advantage compounds into something you'd notice at ten heads. Hiring senior people in Western Europe, it's noise.
Where they genuinely differ
Owned entities versus partner reach. Remote's pricing-page FAQ states it plainly: "We directly own all of our legal entities around the world and never rely on third parties to employ workers." That's why its country list is 90+ rather than 130+ — owning entities is slow and expensive. The practical benefit is fewer handoffs: one contract, one liable party, no sub-processor whose service quality you can't audit. Deel's wider footprint is partly partner-backed, fine in mature markets and worth diligence in thin ones. Ask which model applies to your country before you sign, from either vendor.
Equity is the sharpest split. Remote Equity starts at $39/month and, per Remote's own pricing page, covers "direct employees, EoR, and contractors of Delaware C-Corps." If your cap table lives in a UK Ltd, a GmbH, or a Singapore Pte Ltd, that product isn't available to you and you're paying counsel per country instead. Deel's equity administration spans roughly sixty countries without that parent-entity gate. For a funded SaaS company that grants options broadly, this one line can decide the evaluation — and nobody discovers it until implementation week.
Cash-flow model. Remote leads with "no upfront deposits required," collecting a reserve payment only in rare high-risk circumstances. Deel's documented EOR deposit of 1–1.5× monthly charges is normal industry practice, but it's real money: five European hires at €9,500/month each means roughly €59,000 sitting in someone else's account. It's applied against the final invoice at termination, but it isn't working for you in the meantime.
Payroll timing. Deel's later cut-off (around the 20th) is a real operational convenience if you pay variable comp. Remote's 11th, or 16th in about twenty-three markets, plus a 5th-of-month deadline for contract amendments, means a mid-month raise or commission run lands next cycle. Neither is wrong; one demands tighter internal process. Remote's counterweight is its claimed onboarding speed — an average of 2.3 days against a 30-day industry assumption, based on internal customer data. That's a vendor claim on a vendor page, so weight it accordingly.
Product breadth. Deel sells the whole stack: ATS at $14/worker, contractor management, Contractor of Record, US PEO, EOR, entity setup and closure. Remote has narrowed and tiered instead — three contractor rungs ($29, $99 with $100,000 indemnity per contractor, CoR from $325), a separate payroll product at $29 for your own entities, PEO from $99. Our pillar called Remote's contractor product "thinner than Deel's"; the 2026-07 pricing page doesn't support that any more.
Reputational risk. Deel absorbed the industry's compliance controversies in 2025 — data-scraping allegations and ongoing litigation with Rippling. The product is still strong, but if your buyer is a board or an enterprise procurement team, expect questions. Remote has no equivalent overhang.
Two country-of-hire caveats that override the price
If your parent isn't American and you're hiring in the US. Remote's PEO is billed in USD and requires a US bank account, per its pricing page. A UK Ltd or a Netherlands B.V. hiring a US customer success lead therefore has a prerequisite before it has a vendor — and if you were planning to skip US incorporation, that plan is back on the table. Deel's US PEO at $125/month doesn't advertise the same constraint. This flips a $100/month decision into a "do we need a US entity" decision, a different order of magnitude. Our incorporation pillar and fintech pillar cover the entity-and-banking path.
If you're hiring in Germany, read the notice rules before the price sheet. German notice periods are statutory, not contractual, and they escalate with tenure. Section 622 BGB (official English translation, Federal Ministry of Justice) sets the base period at four weeks effective the 15th or the end of a calendar month, rising to one month after two years of service, two after five, three after eight, and up to seven months after twenty years. Probationary termination is two weeks, for a maximum of six months. Your EOR executes the termination; you pay the notice period either way. On our Berlin example, a post-probation exit at two years' tenure means roughly €9,500 of run-out cost that has nothing to do with which logo is on the invoice. Neither vendor can shorten that, and any vendor implying otherwise is selling something it can't deliver.
The verdict
Pick Deel if your country of hire falls outside Remote's 90-country footprint; if your parent company isn't a Delaware C-Corp and you grant equity; if your hires cluster in lower-salary markets where $1,200 a year is 2.5% rather than 0.9%; if you want ATS, contractors, CoR, PEO and EOR on one contract; or if a later payroll cut-off meaningfully reduces your ops load. Budget for the deposit.
Pick Remote if your hiring is concentrated in countries where Remote owns the entity and you want the shorter liability chain; if working capital is tight and a five-figure deposit hurts more than a $100/month premium; if your parent is a Delaware C-Corp and you want $39/month equity administration rather than per-country legal bills; if you qualify for the 15% startup discount, which erases the fee gap outright; or if procurement will flag Deel's litigation. Tighten your internal payroll calendar to hit the 11th.
Not a tie, and not close once you answer three questions: where are you hiring, what is your parent entity, and how much cash can you leave on deposit. Answer those and one of these two is obviously right for you.

Frequently asked
Is Remote $599 or $699 per EOR employee per month?
Remote's own pricing page shows a single figure of $699, with a billing-currency selector and no annual-versus-monthly toggle. We captured that page on 2026-07-15, 07-20 and 07-27; all three read $699. Third-party trackers still repeat a $599 annual-commitment rate, and our own EOR pillar recorded it on 2026-07-19. Treat $699 as list, $599 as negotiated.
Does either provider require a deposit before the first payroll run?
Remote states no upfront deposits are required, with reserve payments only in rare high-risk cases. Deel's help centre documents a standard EOR deposit of about 1–1.5× total monthly charges, covering salary, employer costs and the management fee. On the €90,000 Berlin hire above that's roughly €11,900 held at signing, refundable against the final invoice.
Can we grant stock options through Remote if our parent is a UK Ltd?
Not via Remote Equity. That product is scoped on Remote's pricing page to direct employees, EOR employees and contractors of Delaware C-Corps, from $39/month. A UK Ltd, GmbH or Pte Ltd parent falls outside it, putting you back on per-country legal work. Deel administers RSUs and phantom equity in roughly sixty countries without that constraint.
Which one covers more countries, and does the count matter?
Deel claims 130+, Remote claims 90+. Not comparable figures: Remote says it owns every entity it employs through, while Deel mixes owned entities with partners. The count only decides anything in one case — if your country of hire is outside Remote's list, the evaluation is over regardless of price.
How different are the payroll cut-offs in practice?
Deel documents a cut-off around the 20th in many countries. Remote's standard is the 11th, moving to the 16th for a long list of markets including Germany, India, the Netherlands and Ireland, with contract amendments due by the 5th. If you run variable commission or overtime, Remote's earlier deadline pushes more items into the next cycle.
Can we move contractors we already pay onto EOR without re-onboarding them?
Both platforms have contractor-to-employee migration flows, and both charge the EOR rate from the switch date. The cost question is which contractor tier you were on: Remote at $29 or $99, Deel at $49 or $325 for Contractor of Record. If you're already on Deel's $325 CoR rate, moving to $599 EOR is a smaller step than it looks.
